The Ceramic Coating Process, Step by Step

Installing a ceramic coating is a multi-stage process, not a quick wipe-on. Every coating starts with a thorough wash and decontamination, followed by paint correction to remove swirls and defects, then a careful surface prep so the coating bonds cleanly. Only then do we apply and cure the coating, panel by panel, in our controlled shop environment.

The prep is where most of the time goes — and it's the reason a professional coating looks better and lasts longer than anything wiped on in a driveway. Here's each stage.

Step 1: Wash and decontamination

The car is washed to remove loose dirt, then decontaminated to pull out what a normal wash leaves behind — embedded fallout, tar, and bonded contaminants. This usually includes a clay treatment and chemical decon so the paint is truly clean before anything else happens. A coating bonds to the surface, so the surface has to be spotless.

Step 2: Paint correction

Next we correct the paint — machine-polishing out swirls, light scratches, and oxidation. This matters more than people expect, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Correcting first means we're sealing in a flawless, glossy finish instead of preserving defects for years. (More on this in why paint correction comes first.)

Step 3: Surface prep

With the paint corrected, we do a final prep wipe to remove all polishing oils and residue. This leaves a chemically clean surface so the coating can bond directly to the clear coat. Skipping this step is a common reason DIY coatings fail early.

Step 4: Coating application

Now the coating goes on — applied panel by panel, leveled carefully, and buffed to a uniform finish. This is precise, methodical work done in a clean, climate-stable shop so dust and temperature don't interfere with the bond.

Step 5: Curing

Finally, the coating cures. It needs time to harden and bond fully, which is why we often keep the vehicle overnight and ask you to keep it dry for the first 24 to 48 hours after pickup. Rushing the cure is the fastest way to compromise the result.
